About BelizeBelize
is a peaceful and diverse country, located at a crossroads between Central
America and the Caribbean. Formerly known as British Honduras, Belize
gained its independence from the U.K. in 1981. It is a parliamentary democracy
and a member of the British Commonwealth. English is the official language
in Belize, making it the only English speaking country in Central or South
America, and enabling seamless communication between visitors and locals.
Many Belizeans also speak Spanish, Creole, and other languages. Belize
has no standing army and is considered the most political stable nation
in Central America. Ambergris
Caye lies 25 miles off the shore of Belize, tucked underneath the Yucatan
Peninsula of Mexico. It’s the largest and most popular of the 200+
Cayes off the coast of Belize. The island is 25 miles long, and between
a couple hundred feet and four miles wide. Ambergris Caye neighbors Belize’s
Barrier Reef, which runs parallel to the east side of the island, less
than a mile from shore. The Barrier Reef boasts many of the top dive destinations
in the Caribbean, and Ambergris Caye’s close proximity to the Reef
has made it a popular destination for adventure seekers.
Most people on Ambergris Caye live in or around San Pedro.
The town’s year-round population, while hard to measure accurately,
is approximately 10,000. Formerly a quiet fishing village, San Pedro has
grown in popularity and size as more people discovered the beauty of Ambergris
Caye. Thankfully, San Pedro has not lost its tropical island charm, nor
its renowned hospitality. The town and the island remain a wonderful place
to visit, or to call home. Getting to Belize and Ambergris Caye
Traveling to Belize is both convenient and affordable. Many US carriers
offer daily nonstop service to Belize, including Continental, American,
US Air, Delta, and Taca. Flight times from Houston, Dallas, Miami, Charlotte,

at Philip SW Goldson Belize International Airport (BZE) just north of
Belize City, San Pedro is a 15-minute plane ride serviced by two local
carriers, Tropic Air and Maya Air. Flights depart hourly. An hour and
fifteen minute long ferry-ride from Belize City to Ambergris Caye is another
way to travel to the island.
